The MS “Magnolia” Chapter of SWANA now offers two opportunities for scholarships for high-school seniors and undergraduate students with interest in the solid waste industry. Scroll down below for information on eligibility and application submittal.

MICHAEL CAPLES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Mississippi “Magnolia” Chapter of SWANA proudly offers scholarships each Spring in honor of the late Michael Caples and his service as Legal Counsel on our Chapter Board of Directors and his many years of dedicated work to SWANA and the solid waste industry. The Chapter may award, as the Board of Directors advises, academic scholarships annually to students attending Mississippi institutions of higher learning and pursuing an undergraduate degree. Awards under this scholarship will be available every Spring.

DOUG WILSON MEMORIAL
SCHOLARSHIP

In loving memory of former Chapter member and Board Member, Doug Wilson, the Mississippi “Magnolia” Chapter of SWANA may award, as the Board of Directors advises, academic scholarships annually to students attending Mississippi institutions of higher learning and pursuing an undergraduate degree. Awards under this scholarship will be available every Fall.

The deadline for application submittal is September 30 of each year; however, for 2024, the deadline has been extended to October 4.

ELIGIBILITY

Scholarships are open to any student who meets the following requirements:

  1. Incoming college freshmen (HS seniors) must have a minimum ACT score of 16, and must submit a Letter of Acceptance from the institution.
  2. College students (excluding incoming freshman) shall maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in collegiate courses to be eligible for the scholarship.
  3. The student must be the child or grandchild of a MS SWANA member, sponsored by a MS SWANA Member, or a Student Member of the MS Chapter of SWANA (application for FREE Student Membership available here). Each member will be allowed to submit only one child per year except under special circumstances.
  4. College students must be enrolled full time as defined by the institution.

The school selected by the student may be a public or private college, university, junior college, community college or vocational – technical school located within the state of Mississippi. Awards of scholarships to the child of a MS SWANA member may be made even if an out of state school is selected if so recommended by the Scholarship Committee and approved by the Board of Directors.

To be considered eligible, the applicant must fully complete the scholarship application, and submit all required attachments including the following:

  1. Sponsor Form
  2. Student’s Resume
  3. Copy of high school transcript
  4. Copy of ACT score
  5. Copy of college transcript (not applicable to current high school students)

SUBMITTAL AND AWARD INFORMATION

Applications shall be submitted to the MS Chapter Scholarship Committee (including all required attachments) either by the applicant or sponsor in 1 of 3 ways:

  1. Submit by email.
  2. Submit to any Board member.
  3. Submit by mail to:

Any past scholarship applicants may reapply for the scholarship as long as they continue to meet the qualifications. An applicant’s previous receipt of this scholarship will not influence subsequent awards.

Scholarship levels are dependent upon number and quality of applications and will be determined by the Scholarship Committee. The Spring and Fall scholarships will be awarded no later than the Chapter’s respective Spring and Fall Conferences. The scholarship will be paid directly to the student after submission of a certificate showing full time enrollment.
